Stylish Ways to Wear Winter Scarves

It’s scarf weather, and we couldn’t be more thrilled! Some don’t put much thought into these innocuous little textiles, and that’s really a pity. Scarves come in as many beautiful patterns and luxurious materials as any other piece of clothing we wear - they’re fabulous, versatile, and perfect for stylish experimentation. Instead of wrapping your scarf a couple times ‘round your neck and calling it good, let’s look at what creative and smart ways you can rock this simple accessory.

The Full Bundle

For those of us in the coldest climes, we tend to work with the heaviest of scarves: we’re talking bulky materials, like chunky wool knits or voluminous blanket scarves. This can limit your options as far as intricate scarf style goes, but there’s still plenty of room to groove out with some surprising wraps.

You can turn your scarf into a cowl, with a drape in front of your neck, the ends wrapped around your throat and then pulled flush with the bottom of the drape - it falls charmingly, and stands ready to be pulled up over the bottom of your face when the wind’s being a jerk. You can do a short braid with a chunky knit scarf that looks stunning, or go modern with a man’s tie knot.

A post shared by @darkesst_sunlight on

With a big enough scarf, you can go completely off-script and turn your scarf into another garment entirely: fold your blanket scarf into a triangle and drape it over your shoulders like a shawl. Then simply belt it over your clothes. (This is also a great look with a large, colorful silk scarf and a thin belt - that’s not going to keep you safe from the cold, but it’s a great decorative look.)

The Comfort Knit

Welcome to the comfortable middleman between desperate-for-warmth heavy scarves and the super sleek fashionable style! This level of scarf tends to be in the traditional oblong shape, and made of soft woven wool or dense cotton or synthetic materials. It’s easier to work into more complicated drapes and knots:

Wendy Nguyen has an amazing and comprehensive scarf tutorial on YouTube, covering 25 ways to wear scarves of this thickness. She employs a number of techniques from rolling to loops to tucking - and they’re all as easy as they sound! Let her inspire you with looks from the classic to the snuggly.

There’s so much more you can do with these scarves - your opportunities for creativity are endless! You can tie and twist two scarves together for a DIY infinity scarf, combining colors or patterns as you please. You could be daring, and tie an enormous bow at a jaunty angle to your throat - a potentially perfect look for arriving to a holiday party!

There are also many tutorials out there for a necklace style using these types of scarves - generally, it involves tying a decorative knot in your scarf with the ends hidden away so it drapes just like a pendant. More structured necklace looks include multiple knots, or braiding your scarf so it circles your throat more closely. (Actual scarf necklaces are a whole other, gorgeous thing and you should look them up on Pinterest when you have some time. Some serious time.)

The Sleek Wrap

While these tend to be the least effective scarves for keeping toasty warm, they still pack some insulating power - particularly scarves made of silk and wrapped snugly. These thin scarves also tend to be the most like brightly-colored plumage, so many jewel tones and daring patterns ensnaring and enchanting the eye.

Everything you can do with a bulkier scarf, you can do with more finesse and intricacy here. Your braided styles get tighter, your knots sleeker, and the kerchief knotted at your throat makes you the personification of flirty chic. Wrapping a long silk scarf tightly around your neck lends you statuesque modernity, while tying a bisous bow tie gives you a touch of luxurious whimsy.

The utility of these scarves doesn’t stop with being wrapped around your neck or shoulders either! A cleverly folded silk scarf becomes a coquettish belt, or a charming headband. If you’re cleaning or feeling retro, tie your scarf over your hair a la the 1940’s (like Rosie the Riveter). There are also so many culturally-specific headwrap styles that can inspire you, so don’t be afraid to draw on and honor your heritage.

Feeling pretty excited about those scarves now, right? We’ve got the bug, too. The only limit is your imagination, so show us what you got: tag us on Instagram with your best scarf styles, or jump into the comments!

New Year 2017 Fashion and Style

New Year Style: Now Be You

Let’s be up front about one thing: 2016 was a hellacious year for a bunch of people. Emphasis on hell. But you know what? We’re past that. We kept walking. And now we’re done with 2016. It’s been put to bed.

Hail to 2017, my friends! Hail to new beginnings and a socially blessed season for starting over. Winter is a great time for reflection - self-reflection, of course, but also reflection on the world. On those we consider our heroes. On what our heroes wear, and whether they can inspire us to become more ourselves.

Your appearance is not all you are in this world, but it is a tool that can be used to influence your world. How you choose to wear your hair, how you choose to wear or not wear makeup, the clothing you select - these things can be self-expression or armor or a prayer. Taking style cues from your heroes might just help you feel more heroic, and give you a place to start building your own style in the world.

Think about it. While you do, take a look at some of our most admired entertainment and style icons.

BEYONCÉ

A photo posted by Beyoncé (@beyonce) on

Queen Bey needs no introduction, or she shouldn’t: she’s been creating popular and powerful music for almost two decades. She’s used that power to influence social change, embracing the term “feminist” and spreading its definition far and wide. She’s also made powerful statements regarding the Black Lives Matter movement, with her most recent project Lemonade.

Beyoncé is also a queen of style, who understands how to work presentation - her stage costumes are carefully chosen to convey specific attitudes, desirability, fierceness, and more. Her personal style is as canny, chosen with deliberation and risks freely taken - from red carpet couture to 90’s throwback styles to flower child reminiscent outfits. Beyoncé can teach you how to define yourself and embrace yourself. She has a mercurial style, but YouTube and Google can easily help you find makeup tutorials and match outfits to channel your inner Queen Bey.

AUDREY HEPBURN

 Audrey Hepburn | ISA Professional

Audrey Hepburn may no longer be with us, but she burns brightly from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Her style and beauty are timeless, and that beauty wasn’t just skin deep. Hepburn spent much of World War II under German occupation in the Netherlands and, while luckier than most, this experience profoundly marked her. She used her later fame and fortune in pursuit of humanitarian ideals, particularly to fight the plight of children in war-torn places.

Audrey’s heyday may be a half century gone, but her combination of elegant and tomboyish looks are just as suitable today as they were in the 50’s. There are hundreds of makeup tutorials on YouTube to help you capture her sleek looks (some of which require a flatiron, and might we suggest this one?) There are even sites dedicated to helping you put together an Audrey-inspired wardrobe. Just check this one out at Who What Wear: “12 Pieces for an Audrey Hepburn-Inspired Wardrobe.” Audrey’s looks can give you poise and elevate your mood

 FAN BINGBING

Fan Bingbing is a celebrated Chinese actress, whose striking style and philanthropic work have captured international attention. Not only did she achieve prestige early in her acting career, but she also began giving back to her community - opening an arts school in 2008, and then becoming strongly involved in Heart Ali, a project helping children suffering from congenital heart disease in Tibet. Fan has also been lauded as an international fashion icon, from her 2010 appearance in a “Dragon Robe” on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet to being honored for her style by Vanity Fair and Elle.

Fan’s style is as mutable as it is fashionable, playing on the forward edge of couture. She’s as comfortable in the sleek lines of a fine black suit as she is marrying wildly differing textiles in a single outfit - like a colorful skirt featuring geometric shapes with a muted appliqué sweater. Her hairstyles and makeup likewise vary from casual, natural looks to chic glamour. She also uses fashion to honor her cultural heritage; let her example inspire you to embrace both yourself and where you come from! Check YouTube for Fan Bingbing makeup tutorials, and explore Google Images for outfit inspiration.

ELLEN DEGENERES

A photo posted by The White House (@whitehouse) on

Ellen Degeneres recently accepted the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama for being cute as a stylish button. Okay, that’s not true - although she is stylish and adorable. Ellen has been recognized for her tenacious bravery in support of LGBT rights although she has personally suffered for her openness. Yet she persevered to build a strong media career, and has dedicated part of her resources to humanitarian work and social activism.

Ellen’s style has been described as dapper and smooth, which are adjectives we can all use in our lives from time to time. She tends to rock relaxed three piece suits, sometimes switching out for a vest or sweater. She avoids bright colors for earthtones or cooler shades. For all that her style is simple and clean, it actually calls for some investment in tailored clothing to pull off - as dapperQ explains in their style icon piece on Ellen. Seeking to reflect the better qualities of Ellen Degeneres in your personal style is also a great excuse to get that pixie cut!

Now that we’ve shared some of favorite ladies with you, we’d love to hear from you: who do you admire? Can their style jumpstart a new beginning for your new year, building your confidence?

We hope so. Because for 2017, here are three important words to remember:

 NOW BE YOU.

2016 Holiday Party Style Guide

NYE 2016 Style Guide

It’s well into the holiday season and parties are popping up all over the place - there’s the office party, the friend shindigs, the family outings - or innings. Whichever. You’ve got a ton of social invites and maybe you’re not entirely sure what to do with your hair… or your makeup, or your clothes. Or all three. What’s a body to do?

Call us, naturally! We’ve got a bevy of tips that’ll have you rockin’ around the tinsel in no time, with well-dressed merriment to spare.

Best Dress Means Velvet and Sparkles

A photo posted by Amy & Hannah (@simplyduostyle) on

There are a few foolproof tactics to ensure a chic holiday outfit this winter, and they’re diverse enough that at least one should fit your signature style. If not, just remember: you can always improvise. Riff on an idea until it’s quintessentially you, then flaunt your look in public - fashion is 80% confidence, after all.

So you’re stuck in jeans for most of the day and have no time between work and party to do a full change. Disaster, right? Not so! Jeans can easily be dressed up with a fantastic top - velvet works a treat here, but there are any number of other choices. Gauzy draped blouses in wine or forest green, sparkling sequin tops in flashing ruby or glittering black, or even a top of textured lace in the rich jewel tones of the winter holidays. Just don’t forget to level up your shoes - heels can instantly elevate jeans (substitute glitzy flats if you can’t do height).

If you have more time to prepare (or a fashion-forward workplace), consider monochromatic color blocking. Dress head-to-toe in holly berry red, snow white, fir green - this stunning single color ensemble will guarantee your unspoken message is “let the merriment begin!” Make sure your clothing is tailored for a sleek profile to telegraph elegance as well.

And, finally, there’s the sparkly motion we all crave: whether in a skirt or pants covered in sequins, a cocktail dress of metallic patterned fabric, or gown sewn from glittering material, you can’t go wrong in something glitzy for the holiday season.

Last looks: statement jewelry pieces are in - take those giant gemstones out to play, or that heavy necklace you’ve been too shy to wear out.

Party Ready Hair; Just Add Accessories

“Not trying too hard” is the order of the day with 2016’s holiday hairstyles. A glance at the red carpet will show you celebrities stepping out in messy chignons, half knots, half-up buns, and the occasional braided crown. This is good news for everyone who’s going straight work-to-party, or those of us who don’t have time to hit the salon on the day of their scheduled festivities. YouTube is your best friend both when it comes to looking for great holiday hairstyles, and walking yourself through doing them. In fact, typing in “holiday 2016 hairstyles” will get you some great tutorials for a variety of hair types, from medium length to natural hair to curly hair and more.

Another classic and easy way to make your ‘do holiday party appropriate is to accessorize with festive clips, ribbons, or barrettes. Vogue has some gorgeous examples to inspire you, and then you can find much more affordable accessories in certain mall boutiques or on Etsy. Our favorite holiday hair accessories have to be incorporating glittering ribbons into your braids, rustic hairbands using natural themes like holly and faux-wood, and gem-encrusted hair combs.

Glitter and Spice Make Holiday Makeup Nice

There are just about two ways to go with holiday party make-up: try a neutral palette when you prefer focus to be drawn to your outfit, or go glam with bold eye makeup and bright lips.

Our Favorite Fall Eyeshadow Trends is a good place to start with what color combinations are in style; just edge toward glittery colors rather than mattes, and privilege a metallic smoky eye over anything restrained. For your lips, red is queen during these cold winter nights. If you’re wary of a bright red matte, try a juicy cranberry or a metallic burgundy lip.

Finally, for the pièce de résistance: give your skin a glowing radiance with shimmering body powder. Who doesn’t want to be a gleaming human-shaped star or the Snow Queen warming up at a holiday party? I know I want to shine!

Jump in the comments and tell us all about your go-to holiday fashion, or what beauty surprises you’ve cooked up for this year’s holiday parties!
