When To Cut Your Hair Short - And When NOT To

To Cut Or Not To Cut Your Hair?

Woman Giving Herself Scalp Massage | ISA Professional

So you have long hair, but something’s changed. You’re eyeing the other side of the divide, and seriously considering cutting your hair short. Maybe you just started working outside and it’s the dog days of summer. Or perhaps you were dumped. Or possibly you just saw a killer short ‘do on TV. Whatever the reason, you’re sweating the decision. It feels huge. World-changing. Potentially amazing.

So, how do you decide?

We’re glad you asked! Because we have opinions. Read on for seven of them.

DO - Because It’s Hot

Woman Taking In The Sun | ISA Professional
If you’re living or working in a humid atmosphere, long hair can be a sweat-soaked nightmare. You can start the day off with a perfect coiffure and wind up feeling like Medusa with limp tresses snaking around your shoulders by the afternoon.

Getting all that hair off, off, off your neck and shoulders can absolutely be heaven! But make sure you understand this: chopping off all your hair will make any weird curls or waves that humidity adds to your hair texture that much… more. You’ll still need to style your hair daily.

DON’T - Because You Love Easy Bad Hair Day Fixes

Woman Waking Up In The Morning | ISA Professional
Short ‘dos can be super-cute but are also more vulnerable to bed head and bad hair days. When you keep your hair long, you have something to work with when your hair is misbehaving—as we showed you before, you can braid it any number of ways, change your part, and accessorize extensively.

Short hair can be a real pain in the ass on a bad hair day, and require extensive styling if you slept on your hair funny the night before. (Or it could look great! Some bedhead does look like what a really good stylist might do…)

DO - Because You Break Up

Woman Wearing Sunglasses | ISA Professional
Cutting all your hair off after a big breakup is an age-old act of transformation. When our lives are shaken down to the foundation, we like to reinvent ourselves—rising like a phoenix with a glorious new hairstyle or color. And cutting off long lengths of hair just feels like shedding that heavy and hurtful past. Kick your painful past to the curb and find a new you!

DON’T - Because You Break Up

Woman Meditating | ISA Professional
Then again, cutting your hair while you’re in an intensely emotional state can backfire. You’re less likely to think through your decision when you’re hurting and just craving some big, visible change. So you might want to slow your roll and consider whether you really want shorter hair, and then consider which style would most suit your face shape and hair type before committing.

DO - Because It Gives You Headaches

Woman With Tight Top Bun Hairstyle | ISA Professional
Long hair can get really heavy, especially for those of you with a thicker hair texture. When you combine that weight with certain hairstyles—like tight braids or ponytails or updos—you create the perfect conditions to get a headache or even trigger a migraine. Some of you might decide the looks you can achieve with long hair are worth the pain—but exploring short hairstyles sounds like a winning (and most importantly pain-free) move.

DON’T - Because Someone Else Looks Great that Way

Woman With Beautiful Curly Hair | ISA Professional
The worst way to select a new hairstyle is by going after the latest fad and what a celebrity is wearing. Don’t get us wrong—that’s a great way to get inspiration! But you need to take that inspiration and seriously consider whether it suits the shape of your face and your hair type. If your hair is stick-straight but you want a tousled bob with a lot of body, your hair’s not going to miraculously achieve that shape with a cut. (Unless your hair is straight because the length is pulling out any natural waves you have.)

There are two great ways to get some insight into what a new hairstyle might look like on you. First, you can find an app that lets you upload a picture of yourself and try different hairstyles on. (Also great for seeing how different hair colors might look with your skin tone.) Secondly, you can make an appointment to speak with a stylist - a skilled stylist will be able to give you insightful feedback about what short styles might suit you. Ideally, do both.

DO - Because You Want To

Woman Rocking Short Wavy Hairstyle | ISA Professional
When it comes right down to it, the best reason to cut off all your hair is because you feel like it. Your hair is an expression of who you are, and the perfect feature for experimenting with new lengths, styles, colors, and accessories until you find those looks that feel right, that you love, and that give you the confidence to rock the world.

After all, as original boss lady Cersei Lannister put it, “I am Cersei of House Lannister, a lion of the Rock, the rightful queen of these Seven Kingdoms, trueborn daughter of Tywin Lannister. And hair grows back.” (Pro-tip, that’s a great personal mantra—just swap out the details to proclaim your own magnificence.)

6 Fast Fixes For Bad Hair Days

Don't Sweat Bad Hair Days With These Tips

Woman Deep In Thought | ISA Professional

Bad hair days are the worst. How many times have you rolled out of bed in the morning, only to deflate once you looked in the mirror? Especially those days when you hit the snooze button too many times and now you’re running late, late, late! It’s hard to feel like a master of your own destiny with bedhead that won’t budge or a thousand flyaway hairs. Or the dreaded frizzy curls.

You know what, though? It’s okay, because we’ve got your back. Read on for six fast fixes for bad hair days!

Refresh Your Hair

Woman Applying Hair Product | ISA Professional
No time for a shower, but your hair is definitely NOT fresh? Don’t sweat it. Simply make sure you keep dry shampoo on hand for just such an occasion. If you don’t have any purchased dry shampoo, you can even MacGyver it—use a small amount of baby powder, or mix up your own with baking soda, a little corn starch, and some natural cocoa powder (chocolate just rescues so many things—holidays, heartbreak, hair).

To use your dry shampoo, you’ll either spray it into your hair or rub some of the homemade dry shampoo on your hands—then work it into the roots. If you still see any of the powder in your hair, brush it out. The dry shampoo should absorb excess oil and leave your hair looking refreshed.

Lean into Old Standbys

Woman With Hairbun Hairstyle | ISA Professional
There’s nothing wrong with turning to an old standby ‘do when you’re facing a bad hair day. The messy ponytail or messy bun are looks you can really lean into as well—if your hair is oily, go for a wet look with a slicked back ponytail. If you have too much frizz that can’t be tamed, don’t try too hard when twisting your hair up into a bun—you might just discover a fashionably disheveled chignon when you’re done.

Braid It Back

Woman Braiding Long Hair | ISA Professional
You know what’s perfect for limp and lifeless hair you just don’t have the time or tools to deal with? Braids. (They’re also perfect for frizzy hair or oily hair… or even good hair days!) We love a good braid here, and it’s a hairstyle that can be fast or fancy, depending on how much time and energy you have.

A tight French braid can be quickly done for an elegant and office-ready look. If you’re not doing anything professional, rock your inner country girl with a pair of pigtails. You can also braid only part of your hair and incorporate it into a number of half-up styles, from partial buns to half-braided crowns. You could shoot for a sophisticated rumpled look, or embrace beach hair (it’s still summer, it works!).

If you’re working with natural hair, there’s so much you can do with braids, though dozens and dozens of small braids is no fast fix. That takes practice and planning. For a quick ‘do, try a braided bun.

Style It Fast

Woman With Beautiful Long Hairstyle | ISA Professional
There are several tried-and-true, quick styling hacks that’ll perk up a bad hair day—starting with simply changing your part. That’s right: by parting your hair differently, you can instantly add volume to lackluster hair. Try parting it on the opposite side from your usual, or going for a deeper part to one side than you normally do. You might discover a new look you love!

If you don’t have time for a full shower, you could try washing just part of your hair. Quickly shampoo and dry your bangs or the forward-most sections of your hair, which should take you from looking unkempt to kempt pretty quickly.

And, of course, never underestimate the utility of your flat iron—use it with a small amount of styling product to smooth away out-of-control frizz or curls.

Distract with Hair Accessories

Woman With Gorgeous Hair Accessory | ISA Professional
So, what if you’ve done one of the above but you’re still frowning at your reflection? It’s time to bring out distracting hair accessories. Use ribbons or scarves to dress up ponytails or half-up ‘dos, drawing attention away from the state of your hair with brightly-colored satin and silk and other textiles.

You could also use any statement barrettes you might have lying around, from large fake flowers to elaborate metal swirls. Do you have headbands? Dig them out and slide them on! Whatever is gorgeous and distinctive, dare to wear.

Cover It Up

Woman Wearing Sun Hat | ISA Professional
If all of these tips have failed—or you just feel like it—break out your favorite headwraps, bandanas, or hats. There’s nothing wrong with covering your hair, and you can look quite fashionable while doing it. Beanies for winter, wide-brimmed hats for summer, and Rosie the Riveter bandana wraps when there’s work to be done. And if you’re ready to rock a head wrap but need help getting started, learn from Paola Mathé’s quick tutorials.

Overcoming a bad hair day is 70% confidence, and 30% having a few tested styles to fall back on. We’ve helped you with the groundwork—now dig deep and remember you bow to no one. Certainly not a bad hair day! Get out there and slay.

5 Green Hairstyles That Are Out Of This World

Gorgeous Green Haired Makeovers To Try This Year

A post shared by Alaina "Scoundrel" Walker 🌙 (@ssscoundrel) on

Out of all the colors you could go with when choosing a fantasy hair color, green is one of the boldest choices in all the right ways. Now that summer is here, why not take the dive and dye your hair bright green to match your tropical mood? There are so many fun tones of green to choose from but whichever you pick, you can bet you will get conversations going. Green hairstyles are also a lot of fun to match with your outfits; I would probably rock a black and white look to channel my inner Beetlejuice. If you're still struggling trying to figure out which kind of green look to rock, let these hairstylists show you all the ways green hair can be perfect for you!

Green Color Melt

A post shared by Presley Poe (@presleypoe) on

This short hairstyle by @presleypoe is great if you want to join two different green tones together. She is able to achieve this gorgeous look by blending the two colors together (also known as a color melt). She then completed the look by styling it in a long and modern pixie cut.

Area 51 Queen

A post shared by Pulp Riot LA Hair Stylist (@hairbykaseyoh) on

It doesn't get any more neon green than this look by @hairbykaseyoh By choosing one perfect green tone, you're able to make a bolder statement that would be be highly visible, even from space. The horned crown she chose to accessorize with this color just makes it a perfect choice for your next concert or music festival!

Green Roots

A post shared by 𝖒𝖎𝖓𝖓𝖊𝖆𝖕𝖔𝖑𝖎𝖘 𝖍𝖆𝖎𝖗🌈🕸𝖒𝖆𝖐𝖊𝖚𝖕 (@kayla_boyer) on

Are you struggling to decide which color to go with and even though green has you interested, you're also leaning towards blue or turquoise? Look no further, @kayla_boyer has the look you've been waiting for! She also used the color melt technique to create this mermaid haired beauty; blending neon green with two tones of blue. I especially like how she chose to place the green color on the roots because it balances the look from bright to darker tones.

Green Accents

A post shared by Sarah YEG (@sugarskullsbysarah) on

If you loved all of these hairstyles but don't want to completely dye your hair a fantasy color, there's always this look by @sugarskullsbysarah You can ask your stylist to place green tones in different parts of your hair or you can ask them to dye the tips and then cut them off when you want a different look in the future. You could also place the green dye on the nape of your neck or on the outer layer of the hair; just consult your stylist to help you make the best decision.

Pastel Green

A post shared by Lizbeth Vargas | SALON OWNER (@lizzvargashair) on

Pastel tones are great because they soften whatever fantasy color you're interested in having and this hairdo by @lizzvargashair is pastel hair goals! She placed a little blue on the roots to give it dimension but kept the green a very light tone. Those curls are also gorgeous but straightening this green haired makeover would also allow others to see the work in a different light; so make sure you switch your looks up when you're styling your new and beautiful green hair!

Which of these would you go with? Let us know in the comments and make sure to follow us on Instagram and Facebook!

5 Ways To Healthy Summer Hair

Give Your Hair Some TLC This Summer

Summertime Fun Surfing In The Ocean | ISA Professional
Summer’s in full swing now, with all the beautiful beach days and sun-kissed afternoons you could want. Happy days for us! Not necessarily such great days for our hair. Before we enjoy one more balmy day, we’d like to share five core methods to use for keeping your hair healthy throughout the summer months, come swimming pool water and sunshine.

Practice Pre-Care

Woman Applying Serum To Her Hair | ISA Professional
Before you head out for a day of fun in the sun, make sure you’re doing a regular pre-sun hair care routine. Use shampoos and conditioners that moisturize your hair—that summer sun can fry your locks and fade your color, UV rays causing split ends and strand breakage. You can also find shampoos and conditioners that include UV protection so that you’re taking care of your hair protection while you’re showering to start your day.

If your hair is already feeling a bit dry and damaged, use a small amount of serum after your daily shower. You could also take some oil—like coconut or argan oil—and massage it into the ends of your hair to ease any crunchiness. Pick up a spray-on sunscreen oil or protective sun oil that will protect your hair all-over as well.

Don’t Forget the Aftercare

Woman Admiring Her Healthy Hair | ISA Professional
Once you’re out of the sun for the day, you’ll want to follow an after-care regimen as well. If you’re looking for something quick, use a cream at the end of the day to rehydrate your hair and offer more UV protection. You’ll find a variety of products on the market that will offer this replenishing protection and that can even double as a styling product.

It’s also a great idea to regularly use a deep-conditioning, nourishing hair mask once a week during the summer months. Think of it as a designated salon day each week that will keep your hair in amazing condition and touchably soft despite everything the sun, salt water, and swimming pool throw at it.

Swimming Pool Hair Safety

Woman Enjoying The Sun Next To Pool | ISA Professional
Swimming pools are great fun, but they’re also full of chemicals that aren’t friendly to your hair. Happily, there are a few steps you can follow to safeguard your hair from the worst of their effects. Start out by rinsing your hair with clean water before you dive in. Your hair absorbs liquids, so saturating your tresses with clean water leaves less room for your strands to absorb chlorine and otherwise chemically-treated water. Once you’re out of the pool, you should rinse your hair again to flush out any chemicals clinging to your hair.

You could also use hair oil right before getting in the water so that your strands are coated and water can’t penetrate your hair follicles. Leave-in conditioner can work as well.

Of course, one of the best protective steps you can take to guard your hair while swimming is to wear a swimming cap. Your hair will be twisted up under the cap and kept safe from the water.

Cover Your Head

Woman Wearing Hat For Sun Protection | ISA Professional
One of the most tried and true methods in protecting your hair and face from the strong summer sun is to cover up—sunny days are perfect hat weather. Hats are versatile accessories, too, allowing you to add another layer to your style. From big floppy-brimmed hats to baseball hats to Panama hats, there’s a hat out there in the perfect material, color, and trim to match your look.

If hats aren’t your thing, they’re not your only option. You can also rock bandanas or head wraps in a variety of colors, patterns, and styles of wear.

Don’t Forget Your Scalp

Woman Enjoying Time Outside | ISA Professional
We’ve focused mostly on protecting your hair, but it’s important that you don’t neglect your scalp, either! It’s just as vulnerable to the sun as your hair, so you should take some precautions to protect it from sunburn and UV rays.

If you have thick hair, that coverage will offer natural protection to your scalp—but you’ll still want to pay attention to your hairline as well as where your hair parts. Make sure you use sunscreen in those areas; those with thin hair will need wider coverage. You can actually find products made especially for application to your scalp, and they come in mineral powders, sprays, oils, mousse, and sunscreen sticks. Just shop around until you find what works best for you.

Ready to rock healthy hair all summer long? We thought so! Share your summer looks with us on Facebook and Instagram!
