The Truth About Tea and Learning to Love It

The Many Healthy Benefits of Drinking Tea

Woman Drinking Hot Tea- ISA Professional

If I asked you which beverage is the most consumed in the world, excluding water, what would your answer be? Coffee? Soda? Beer? It may surprise you, but that honor belongs to none other than tea! Depending on where you live, you may be skeptical. After all, Americans love their coffee while Germans love their beer. While different countries have their preferences, it doesn't change the fact that tea is still the heavyweight champion in the beverage department and luckily for us, that's a good thing.

Although there have been many studies showing the benefits of drinking coffee or beer, tea is also good for your health for various reasons. Now, if you don't like drinking tea because it's too watered down or the taste is not to your liking, you are not alone. I personally hated drinking tea, I preferred soda or water (even though my mother was a huge tea drinker and constantly tried to make me drink it with her). After hearing about the many benefits of tea combined with my mother's continuous nudging, I made the decision to force myself to love drinking it. And guess what? You can do it too!

One way to make it easier to love tea is to understand the different kinds that exist and the benefits you can reap from drinking them. Knowing that your goal is for your own good will make it easier to continue drinking it, and believe me the payoff is amazing. A good way to start is by mixing it with milk, adding honey or cooling it off with ice cubes and adding sugar to it. These additions will help you get accustomed to the tea but remember: the final goal should be for you to be able to drink your tea with nothing added to it. I achieved this and now I can't get enough of it! Now, pick one of the many teas available and start your tea loving journey today!

Green Tea

Green Tea- ISA Professional

Green tea is extremely popular in Asia and for good reasons. Green tea is the least processed of the teas; remember, all teas come from the same plant: Camellia sinensis. What makes them different is how the leaves are processed and oxidized. This gives green tea a very delicate and nice flavor.

The benefits of green tea are considerable: it's packed with antioxidants such as polyphenols and Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), both which help protect your cells from damage. These antioxidants work hard by helping stimulate hair growth and leaves you with softer hair. Green tea also helps you lose weight due to it being calorie free, as well as helping lower your cholesterol levels, which in turn, helps your heart. In some cases, green tea revs up your metabolism, making weight loss easier to achieve. It also has catechins, which decrease inflammation, leaving you with younger looking and beautiful skin.

Caffeine wise, it's on the lower side of teas, with about 25mg per cup. Another type of green tea is macha tea, it's very popular in Japan and used in powder form. It has good amounts of Vitamin C, zinc, magnesium and selenium. This helps prevent disease but may not be the best choice for tea beginners due to its grassy taste.

Black Tea

Black Tea- ISA Professional

Black tea is the most common type of tea and is fully fermented; it's also the tea with the highest caffeine content with about 40mg per cup. Black tea, like green tea, is also great for lowering your cholesterol levels. This is because it contains the antioxidants theaflavins and thearubigins, which helps your heart's health and even decreases your risk of having a stroke. Some reseach shows that the antioxidants in black tea can help prevent ovarian cancer, making it great for women to drink. If you're having problems with cavities, polyphenols will help kill the bacteria which causes cavities, leading to a healthier mouth. It also helps prevent that sticky plaque which appear on our teeth, so if you want a beautiful smile, black tea is for you!

Oolong Tea

Oolong Tea- ISA Professional

Oolong is like a hybrid between black and green tea, this is because its leaves are partially oxidized. Since oolong tea is fermented for a shorter amount of time, it makes it taste richer than black or green tea. If you regularly find yourself stressed out, you'll find that drinking oolong tea will help reduce your stress levels by up to 18%! Unless you can't take caffeine, oolong tea will help your digestive track by reducing inflammation and also helps with stomach ulcers and acid reflux. A cup of oolong tea has about 30mg of caffeine.

White Tea

White Tea- ISA Professional

White tea is a great one to begin with because it's one of the mildest tasting teas; this is because the leaves are picked very early on and they are unfermented. White tea will help eliminate free radicals in your body, which can lead to damaging your DNA, making it a great immune booster for your body. Many love drinking white tea because it helps relieve arthritis pain, so getting some loose white tea leaves for your grandparents as a gift would probably be highly appreciated. White tea also has the lowest caffeine levels with about 15 mg per cup.

Herbal Tea (Tea?)

Herbal Tea- ISA Professional

You may have seen plenty of herbal teas at your market but I have news that may surprise you: herbal teas are not real teas! They are simply infusions of leaves, barks, fruit or roots in water. Even if they are not traditional teas, they can still have health benefits (although not nearly as much as the traditional teas listed above).

A popular herbal tea that is regularly used to help digestion and gas is peppermint tea. You'll also find that ginger tea can help quiet your upset stomach and motion sickness symptoms. Chamomile is a soothing and calming tea, usually reserved for right before bedtime and as a tool to help insomnia. Rose hips are the fruit of the rose plant and are a great source of Vitamin C, which helps your immune system work more efficiently.

Woman Enjoying Garden- ISA Professional

If you've managed to make it to the bottom of this post, then I hope I've convinced you to go out and try a cup for yourself. Giving tea a chance and learning to love it will make you healthier and feel better overall, and really, what's better than that? Steeping and choosing the right temperature for tea can be tricky but with practice, you can become a master brewer. If you're already a tea lover like myself, tell me your favorite tea; mine is green! Happy drinking!

Travel Essentials For Your Next Summer Getaway

4 Must-Have Summer Travel Items

Woman Enjoying Caribbean Summer View- ISA Professional

Summer has officially arrived and many of us are excited for what the season brings with it. For the next couple of months, you won't have to worry about bulky coats or jackets. Now is the time to bring out that mini skirt you bought earlier in the year, looking forward to how great you would look when the weather got warmer. Another amazing perk to the summertime is getting to wear more stylish and colorful outfits to reflect the sunny weather: pink, orange, yellow, purple, blue... the possibilities are endless! Patterns are also great for summer, giving you plenty of fun prints to choose from.

Summer is the time to become bolder when choosing your look; after all, summer is a time to have fun in the sun and look fabulous doing it. Many of us choose to vacation or go on a getaway during this season; whether it's because your kids are on their school break or because you just want to lounge on the beach or pool during your time off, summertime is the perfect time to take a break from your routine and go off on an adventure!

After choosing where you want to enjoy your summer getaway (my personal favorite is Puerto Rico, it has gorgeous beaches and no passport is needed to travel if you're a US citizen), then comes the not so fun part of packing for your trip. Packing may seem daunting and a hassle but it doesn't have to be. Thinking ahead will help your packing go by much faster, and better yet, you'll be prepared for anything that comes your way. Making sure you have these travel essentials will ensure you have the best summer getaway possible, all you need to add are some rays of sunshine!

Sun Protection

Blonde Woman with Sunglasses Applying Sunscreen - ISA Professional

While the importance of sun protection is well known, you'd be surprised how many people forget to include this necessity before leaving home. Making sure to pack SPF (for both the body and the face) for the whole family will not only save you money, but will protect your skin form the sun's harmful UVA/UVB rays (SPF products in tourist destinations love to inflate the price for consumers that didn't plan ahead).

Don't forget to apply on your hair line and ears, these parts are usually forgotten and can burn very easily. If you planned on getting a tan on your getaway, try to do so responsibly. Don't stay in the sun for too long, and more importantly, don't go out in the sun without SPF, or even worse, with baby oil! These methods may give you a tan quicker but are not worth the risks of skin cancer and horrible sunburn. The last thing you need on your summer getaway is to have inflamed, red skin and barely be able to move for the rest of your trip. Other essential items to protect you from the sun include sunglasses with UVA/UVB protection and chic, large hats. Remember, there's nothing sexier than healthy skin!

Hair Straighteners and Products

Woman With Sleek, Healthy, Long Hair Using Hair Straighteners- ISA Professional

With hot weather comes the inevitable humidity and we all know that humidity is hair's worse nightmare. Thinking ahead for your trip will make your hair look amazing all day long. All you need is a hair straightener, a frizz fighting product, some mousse and hair ties. Flat ironing your hair with a quality hair straightener will make all the difference; that's because the high quality mirror titanium flat iron plates glide smoothly without harming you hair in the process and will make your sleek look last longer. Don't feel like straightening your hair and prefer a wavy look? You could take advantage of this straightener's rounded edge, tapered tip and no-tangle cord to create a variety of looks!

After you're done styling your hair, apply some frizz fighting product like argan oil to ensure that the humidity stays away. What if there's a day you don't feel like using a flat iron? Easy, just apply some hair styling mousse or gel to get the look you want. And lastly, if you ever feel like the heat is too much at any point, just tie your hair up in a ponytail and add a cute headband or bandanna to elevate your look!

Versatile Outfits

Woman Wearing Stylish Summer Outfit- ISA Professional

You may feel overwhelmed with choosing the right clothes for your summer getaway; so many choices, so little time! The trick is to think of the most versatile clothes you have that can be styled with different pieces and still look unique.

An orange colored mini skirt would go great with a white, yellow or printed top. If you're wearing a two piece bathing suit, switch up your tops and bottoms so it looks different every time. A great way to look fashionable without a lot of effort is a reversible bathing suit or skirt. Two looks in one piece of clothing is a thing of beauty! When packing your clothes, a good tip is to roll your clothes up so they don't take as much space in your bag. Folding them may seem like a good idea but trust me, once you roll, you'll never look back. To avoid your shoes dirtying your clothing, wrap them up in plastic bags and do the same when it's time to come back home.

To ensure you don't forget anything, think from the top of your head to the tips of your toes and pack by body parts. Writing down what you need will make the process go by quicker, just check off your items as you pack. Also, short dresses are a great idea for your summertime getaway because they don't take up too much space, look chic and are made for this time of the year!

Games and Snacks For The Kids (And Adults!)

Coloring Book Flat Lay - ISA Professional

Keeping your kids entertained on a long flight or drive can sometimes be difficult, but by packing some games for your summer getaway trip, you will make all of your lives easier. Playing cards, dominoes, travel sized board games, books and coloring books are some great choices to keep them entertained and you happy.

Don't have children? No problem, you can still enjoy these activities to pass the time; after all, you're never to old to play! Coloring books are my personal favorite for kids and adults alike because it's so calming and fun to do. Games are also a great way to spend time with your family during your summer getaway.

Another great way to be prepared for anything is to bring snacks. You never know if your flight will be delayed or when hunger will strike; keeping some sandwiches, trail mix or cookies nearby can be extremely helpful. The summer heat shouldn't be underestimated, so make sure you stay hydrated at all times or you run the risk of getting heat stroke. Drinking plenty of water and enjoying the sunny sky go hand in hand, so get to packing those bags and take advantage of the summer weather while it lasts!

Choosing The Right Foundation For Your Skin Doesn't Have To Be Intimidating

The Right Foundation for Your Skin Type

For those who are new to wearing foundation, going to the store to find the right fit for you may seem daunting. But it doesn't have to be! Researching the facts before going to the store is the best way to prepare yourself and be certain that you know how to pick the right foundation for your skin type.

Even if you don't have skin issues to hide, the right foundation will make you look more polished and airbrushed, and honestly, who doesn't want that? Whether it's for daily use or special occasions, a great foundation will make you feel beautiful and will last all day.

Always moisturize and use a Makeup Primer

A good tip to follow is to always moisturize and apply a makeup primer before applying your foundation; this will ensure your skin is hydrated and will make foundation application much easier. A great makeup primer and moisturizer will also help you use less foundation, helping you save money in the long run. I highly recommend ISA Professional's XANADU 24K Gold Foundation Primer, it gives me a beautiful glow and leaves my skin smooth, making foundation application fool-proof. It also holds my foundation in all day long, no more touch ups needed during the day! It's definitely the HG of makeup primers; it aids your makeup routine, while simultaneously making your skin healthier and smoother. After you apply your primer, it's time for your foundation; just follow these tips to look flawless!

Choose Formula According To Your Skin Type

Foundation Shades ISA Professional

Everyone's skin has specific needs and recognizing your skin type will make your skin care and makeup routine SO much easier. Whether you have dry, sensitive, oily or combination skin, don't worry; there's a perfect foundation out there for you. Dry skin needs a boost of hydration, so liquid foundations are best, especially if they provide a dewy finish. Sensitive skin types should stay away from fragrances, making mineral makeup ideal for avoiding any irritation. Oily skin types are usually acne prone, so they should stick with an oil free foundation to avoid breakouts and shine. Combination skin types should use a water based and oil free foundation for best results.

Choose Shade According To Your Jawline (NOT Your Hand!)

Girl Pointing at Jaw ISA Professional

The best way to find the right foundation is to try it in the store before buying it. If there is one makeup item you shouldn't buy without seeing and trying first, it's foundation. First and most important, DO NOT test the foundation on your hand; instead, test it on your jawline to find the shade closest to your skin color. Your perfect shade should be almost invisible on your skin (a hard feat, but trust me, you will find it!). Another option would be to ask a beauty representative in the store to help you find your shade; just make sure you look at yourself in different lightning, including daylight, before purchasing!

Get To Know Your Foundation Tools And Use The One That Suits Your Needs

Makeup Brush Collection ISA Professional

There are several makeup tools that can be used to apply your foundation, it's just a matter of finding one that suits your personal needs. First, there's the ever popular makeup sponge, used mainly to get a streak free look by lightly moistening it, before patting your foundation down smoothly. Another makeup tool that's popular with liquid foundation users is the classic foundation brush. This brush is usually slightly tapered and is used in downwards strokes to get even foundation coverage. Lastly, you can also use the tips of your fingers to apply foundation, the warmth from your fingers helps you apply your product evenly. This technique is best used for BB creams or tinted moisturizers, since these low coverage foundations are lightweight and are easily blended into the skin.

Always Look For Foundation With SPF

Face in The Sun ISA Professional

One of the main things you should look for in a foundation is SPF protection. Lucky for us, there's a wide range of SPF loaded foundation options out there, just do your research before buying. Remember, the higher the sun protection, the better for your skin! Makeup should help protect your skin as well as enhance your features, so go out there and find the foundation that makes you and your skin feel best!
