Comb Your Hair The Proper Way - 4 Tips To Help You

Proper Hair Combing Tips

You may think that brushing your hair is easy and doesn't require much knowledge. Think again. In order to give your hair the care it deserves, you should be aware of how you may be sabotaging it when it comes to brushing, and not even know it. Combing your hair regularly can be beneficial because it helps spread your hair's natural oils from root to tip. It also helps aid in faster hair growth by simply massaging your scalp with your brush, after you're done combing it through. Even the brush's materials have a big impact on your end results. Below are 3 tips to help you brush your hair with ease and confidence.

1. Invest In The Right Hair Brush:

You begin by choosing the right brush for your hair type. This ensures you are treating your hair with the natural or synthetic material that works best with it. For fine hair, try to go with 100% natural boar bristles as your brush material. While this may be a bit pricey, it's a well made investment. That's because the boar hair helps make your hair naturally shinier and is gentle on your fine hair, which is so prone to breaking. If you can't get boar bristles, choose a mixed material brush instead; by having some natural boar hair mixed in with a synthetic material, you get easier de-tangling with the benefits of natural shine.

For coarser and thicker hair types, go with full synthetic( like nylon) or also go with mixed materials; they make it easier to comb your hair because of their strong, sturdy bristles. For heavy de-tangling, use a wide tooth comb to help avoid breakage. Another handy tip to remember is to allow your hair to air dry before using any heat styling tools. When using a flat iron, it's best to use a paddle brush (after brushing your hair of any tangles), since it helps with getting your hair straighter, faster. I love to use my Victorya flat iron by ISA Professional in combination with my 100% boar bristle paddle brush to get the job done right.

2. DO NOT Brush Your Hair When Wet:

Brushing your hair when it's still wet is something I admit to have done in the past, but no longer. That's because brushing your wet hair will lead to serious hair damage and breakage. Your hair loses elasticity after you wash it. Brushing it while still wet will leave you with brittle, frizzy hair. If you insist on de-tangling it after washing it, use a brush made specifically to be used on wet hair.

3. Go From The Bottom, Up:

Do not make the mistake of starting at the roots when brushing your hair, this will only cause more knots and damaged locks. The trick is to be patient. Divide and conquer. Divide you hair into three even parts, and start from the tips, slowly working your way up. This helps avoid any painful tugging or breaking. If your hair is prone to knots, use a leave in conditioner or serum to help your hair be more manageable. If you rush the process, your hair will show the consequences.

4. Clean Your Brush Bi-weekly:

You should take good care of your brush so it can continue to take good care of your hair. Wash it once every two weeks (even weekly, if you want) by swirling the bristles in a bowl of warm water mixed with a couple of drops of shampoo for a couple of minutes; DO NOT soak the whole brush, just the bristles. Afterwards, run it under clean warm water, pass your fingers through to make sure it doesn't have any excess dirt, shake off excess water and lay the bristles face down on a towel to dry.

Hair Masks To Revitalize Your Hair

Hair Masks

While you may always be concentrating on constantly moisturizing with face and body creams to make sure your skin is looking as healthy as possible, you are missing out on the amazing benefits of applying a hair mask. Although it is very important to follow a skin regimen that will make your skin and face feel great, there are also many hair masks that can help your hair look and feel healthier.

The best part of hair masks is that while you can buy premade ones at the store, you can save serious money by making them yourself! This may sound like a lot of work but it really isn't; in fact, most of these ingredients may already be in your home as you read this. Using hair masks will help your hair become more manageable, softer, shinier and most importantly, healthier! They are also all natural, so you avoid any harsh chemicals from the pre made treatments.

I like to apply hair masks when I'm ready to wash my straightened out hair. Since I use the Victorya hair straightener from ISA Professional often, I like to give my hair some extra love and apply a hair mask once a week. Not only does my hair look great, it helps me spend less time styling, which is a huge plus. Below are a couple of my favorite hair masks for you to try out; once you see the results, you will never forget to treat your hair ever again.

For Hair Growth:

For this mask, you will need an egg yolk and green tea. Green tea helps prevent hair loss due to its high amounts of antioxidants. Eggs are high in protein which helps strengthen hair follicles, making this mask great for anyone wanting quicker hair growth or to prevent hair loss. Mix one egg yolk with two tablespoons of already brewed, warm green tea. The mixture will become frothy thanks to the egg, apply from roots to tips of your hair, cover with shower cap and let sit for 45 minutes. Rinse off with cold water, shampoo and condition afterwards. Since the idea is to strengthen your hair follicles as much as possible, I suggest you apply this mask twice a week for best results.

For Damaged Hair:

For this hair mask, you will need a very ripe banana and some pure honey. This mask helps make your hair easier to manage when combing or brushing afterwards, which means less breakage. Due to the banana's high potassium content, this mask also helps restore your damaged locks, works for all hair types and doesn't weigh your hair down. It smells delicious and works best when you use a very ripe banana. Blend the ripe banana to a very smooth consistency and mix in a tablespoon of pure honey. Apply hair mask from roots to tips, cover with shower cap and let sit for 30 minutes. Rinse off with cold water, shampoo and condition afterwards. Apply this mask once a week to have soft and easier to style hair.

For Shiny Hair:

For this hair mask, you will need a ripe avocado and some regular mayonnaise. Mash up the peeled avocado until smooth and mix in a cup of regular mayo (NOT low fat). Apply hair mask from roots to tips, cover with shower cap and let sit for 20 minutes. Rinse off with cold water, shampoo and condition afterwards. This hair mask is great to hydrate dry hair, leaving it super shiny and soft to the touch. It's great for color treated hair because it helps add shine to your chemically altered locks. Apply this mask once a week to always have shiny, healthier hair in between salon visits.

How To Treat An Oily Scalp At Home

DIY Oily Scalp Treatment

All of us can get a greasy scalp from time to time, but there are also those who can't seem to shake off all that natural oil from their hair. Those with oily scalps have to deal with looking like they overdid it with a hair product and some even feel uncomfortable from an itchy scalp. Some people get oily scalps from too much stress at work or school, and some are just born with that type of hair. Since an oily scalp clogs hair follicles with dirt, an oily head of hair can also lead to hair loss, because of poor circulation. While it may seem very frustrating to constantly try to avoid limp, greasy locks, there are ways to help you treat your scalp in the comfort of your house. If you are having issues with an oily scalp, follow these tips to get balanced, healthy hair!

Use High Quality Hair Products and Styling Tools

Cheaper brands of hair products like shampoos and serums leave a lot of buildup in your hair and scalp because of the harmful chemicals they contain. These then leave you with even oilier hair, making it an endless cycle. While some believe you should wash oily hair everyday, I have found that shampooing your hair no more than three times a week is the best method. If you wash your hair out too frequently, your oil glands will go haywire trying to make up the oils you keep washing off.

While too much oil is a bad thing, too little oil can also be harmful. Stick to products with natural ingredients that boast oil control benefits; these will help keep your hair balanced, leaving you with healthy locks. Keep in mind that oil absorbing shampoo's usually contain tar, zinc or sulfur. High quality products holds true for heat styling tools as well; a flat iron made of 100% ceramic/tourmaline will protect your hair with evenly heating plates. I suggest investing in the Victorya flat iron by ISA Professional, it leaves hair super smooth and helps prevent damage that other, cheaper brands can cause you.

Only Apply Conditioner On Your Ends, Avoid Your Roots

This is because conditioner will only add more oil to your hair, weighing it down even more. By applying conditioner on your ends, you hydrate any split ends you might have. Avoid conditioning your roots to see the difference in your oil production. Some stylists suggest skipping the conditioner altogether; if you find conditioning your ends to not be enough to control your oil production, try skipping the conditioner for better results. Remember to rinse with cold or room temperature water for a long amount of time, for best results. By rinsing longer than usual, you ensure you get rid of any product still left in your hair, leading to less oil.

Use Dry Shampoo Or Talcum Powder For A Quick Oil Soaking Fix

Dry shampoos are especially beneficial to the oily scalped. Dry shampoos soak up oil from your scalp; use it between washing days to keep your hair looking great. It also removes any environmental build up or dirt on your scalp, leaving your hair nicely scented in the process. You can also use talcum powder to soak up the oil, just apply to the roots and comb through the hair.

Apply Vinegar Rinse Once-Twice A Week

White vinegar has acetic acid which quickly helps control your scalp's oil production and helps prevent dandruff. Mix one cup of white vinegar with half a cup of water. Apply all over your hair, making sure your scalp is soaked. Let it sit for 15 minutes and rinse off with cold water. Your hair will be oil and dandruff free and the smell goes away after hair dries.

How to care for your Curly Hair

Curly Hair Tips

While many naturally straight haired women yearn to have curly locks, those with those same curls sometimes feel like no matter what they do, their hair can never be controlled. The reality is, no matter if your hair is straight or curly, the secret to getting the hair you love is to learn how it works. There are certain things you should avoid if you want your hair to be beautifully curly and some things you should always do to keep those curls controlled. It's important to understand and love your hair, there's no point in always wanting the opposite. It doesn't matter if it's straight or curly; with the right tools, your hair will always look healthy and amazing.

Do's:

-Do keep your curly hair well moisturized. Curly hair is naturally dry, so using an oil treatment like argan oil will make your curls pop and make your hair much more manageable. I usually apply argan oil to my towel dried, detangled hair. Comb it out to make sure it's spread evenly on your hair, scrunch your hair a bit with your hands, and allow it to air dry. My curls get a serious hydration boost and it leaves my curls defined and shiny.

-Do invest in high quality heat styling tools and heat protecting sprays. I prefer to allow my hair to air dry before using my trusty Victorya flat iron by ISA Professional. By making sure your tools are 100% ceramic (not those cheaper brands that only coat ceramic the plates), you allow the heat to be distributed evenly, avoiding any heat damage to your curly hair. If you prefer blow dryers, invest in a diffuser, which will protect your curls by distributing the hot air (instead of blasting it all over the place).

-Do sleep on a satin pillow sheet or use a satin sleep cap. Cotton can make your curls break out in frizz and leave your hair full of knots while you sleep. Another trick is to use a T-shirt (not a towel) to dry your hair. Get rid of as much water from your hair as you can in the shower, then gently pat your hair to avoid frizz and breakage.

Don'ts:

-Don't use any products that contain silicone. While this may seem impossible, there are plenty of silicone-free hair products to choose from. Even though silicone makes your hair look shiny, its only working on the outer hair shaft. By using silicone products, you don't allow your hair to be completely moisturized, since silicone is a moisture barrier.

-Don't use a brush, stick to combing only. Curly hair is prone to breakage and damage so extra care is needed. Stick to using a wide tooth comb (this protects your curls even more). After you condition, detangle with it in the shower, it also helps fight off frizz!

-Don't forget to get your ends trimmed every 7 weeks. Even if you want to grow your curls out, this step is still important. This is because hair thrives and even grows quicker when you trim it. You will love your curls even more when you see the results of getting a little bit of hair cut off. If you're scared how you'll look afterwards, ask your stylist to trim it dry, not wet.
